Nothing you scan ever reaches us. Two small requests do leave your browser, both listed below, and neither one carries a creator, a post or anything you saved.
Nothing about what you do in the extension. There is no account to create and no sign-in. We do not see the creators you scan, the posts you save, the notes you write or the tags you add, because none of it is ever sent to us. That holds whether you pay us or not.
If you subscribe to Pro, we hold your licence key and a random number your own browser made up when you installed the extension. That is the entire list, it is described in full further down, and nothing in it says who you are.
We do not sell, rent, share or transfer user data to anybody.
Moteru is made and operated by Nicolas John Scaife, a sole trader based in New Zealand, at [email protected]. If you are in the European Union or the United Kingdom, that makes him the data controller for the licence key and the random install number, and for nothing else, because there is nothing else.
Those two items sit on servers run by Cloudflare and reachable from New Zealand. The European Commission has decided New Zealand protects personal data adequately, so this transfer needs no extra paperwork from you.
Everything Moteru produces stays in your own browser profile on your own machine, in two places Chrome provides:
chrome.storage.local holds your settings and the cached result of your last scan of a creator.
IndexedDB, in a database named influencer_finder_db, holds your saved library: the posts you starred, with your notes and tags.
Uninstalling the extension removes both. You can also clear them at any time from Chrome’s own site and extension data controls. There is no copy anywhere else, which also means we cannot restore your library for you if you delete it.
That is the complete list. There are no optional permissions and nothing is requested later. Chrome shows you the same list on the Web Store before you install, and you can compare it against this page.
When you run a scan, Moteru asks Instagram for the same public information Instagram is already showing you on the profile you have open: posts, and the view, like and comment counts attached to them. It uses the session you are already signed in to, in your own browser, exactly as the page in front of you does.
A quick scan reuses posts the page has already loaded. A deep scan pages through the creator’s public post history. Discover, which is in beta, reads Instagram’s own suggested-accounts list for a creator you give it.
It never signs in as you, never asks for your password, and never posts, likes, follows or messages anyone. It only ever reads, and only what you can already see. It reads at a human pace, stops if Instagram pushes back, and holds to a daily ceiling on requests.
Scanning is not an Instagram feature and Instagram does not endorse it. No tool of this kind can promise you zero risk to your account, and anyone who tells you otherwise is lying to you. Moteru is not affiliated with Instagram or Meta.
The extension has no analytics, no telemetry, no crash reporting and no error logging service. It makes three kinds of request and no others.
Instagram. Every scan. Described above.
A settings file. Every install, about every six hours, from moteru-config.brbsocials.workers.dev. A plain download of endpoint patterns and pacing numbers, so a change at Instagram can be fixed without waiting on a store review. It sends nothing about you and carries no identifier.
The licence check. Pro subscribers only, and never for anybody else. Described in the next section.
Paying adds one outbound request and one payment relationship. Both are described here in full, and neither touches anything you scanned.
The licence check. When you activate a licence key, and roughly every four hours after that, the extension asks our licence server whether that subscription is still live. It sends two things: the licence key you were given, and a random identifier generated on your machine when you installed the extension. That identifier is a fresh random number. It is not derived from your name, your email, your Instagram account or anything about your device, and it exists only so one subscription can cover up to three of your own installs. The server answers yes or no. It receives no creator, no post, no username and no scan result, ever.
The payment. Our order process is conducted by our online reseller Paddle.com, who is the merchant of record for all Moteru orders. You enter your payment details on Paddle’s checkout, not ours. We never see or hold your card number. Paddle passes us your email address and country so we can support you and so the right tax is charged, and Paddle’s own privacy policy governs what they hold. Cancelling is covered in the terms, and refunds in the refund policy.
If you cancel, the licence check stops mattering and you can remove the key from the extension’s Options, which deletes it from this device and frees the slot. Your library, notes and tags are untouched by any of this, because they never left your browser in the first place.
We keep your licence key and the random install number for as long as the subscription runs, because a subscription that cannot be checked cannot be honoured. In legal terms that is processing needed to perform the contract you bought, not consent, so there is no consent box here to tick or untick.
Cancel, and the record stops being valid immediately and is deleted within 90 days. Sooner if you ask. Open Options in the extension and press Remove from this device and the install number is deleted on the spot and the device slot is freed, which is also what to do before you sell a laptop.
If you are in the European Union or the United Kingdom you can ask for a copy of what we hold, ask us to correct it, ask us to delete it, or object to us holding it. Write to [email protected] and you will hear back inside 30 days. There is no charge. If you think we have handled it badly you can complain to your national data protection authority, and in the United Kingdom that is the Information Commissioner’s Office.
This site is a set of static files. It sets no cookies, stores nothing in your browser, and runs no analytics or tracking script of any kind. The host that serves the files keeps ordinary web server logs, which is true of any website you visit.
Moteru is a tool for people who make things for a living or want to. It is not directed at children under 13, we do not knowingly take a subscription from one, and the free version asks nothing of anybody.
If this ever stops being accurate, this page changes before the behaviour does, and the date below changes with it. If a future version needs to send anything anywhere, it will say so here in plain words and ask you first.
Questions about this policy, or about anything on this page you would like to verify: [email protected].
